If you have been reading this site, you will know that I often become obsessed with certain looks or designers. Well, I have a new obsession: fused glass. I recently came across Fusion Illusion, a home-grown Los Angeles company. This is a husband-and-wife team, who, together with their daughter, work out of the family garage.

Fused glass isn’t the same as hand-blown glass; not even close. Fusing glass is far more technical. I do not even pretend to understand the process, so I will steal this blurb from the Fusion Illusion website:

Most of our work contains Dichroic glass, which produces the amazing effect of having multiple colors as they shift when held in direct light. The 30 layer coating is produced in a highly technical process using quartz crystal and metal oxides released in an airless vacuum chamber. Though the coating is only 35 millionths of an inch, it produces magnificent effects through combinations of reflected and transmitted color. Glass is then hand-cut and fused to create unique pieces of glass art. Fusing glass is the process of taking multiple pieces of glass cut by hand and joining them together in a kiln, set at approximately 1500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Did you get all that? Good. Let’s get back to the beauty of this piece. The colors of this piece are jaw-dropping. An almost indescribable patina of pink, blue, green and gold. When placed against a dark background, the colors reflect more of the blues; against a light background, pinks and greens. And when held up to the light, it become a blinding psychedelic swirl of neon colors. The relief surface of this pendant helps to catch the light and accentuate the colors, making the pendant glow from within.

Since each piece is individually hand made, no two are the same. They may make a series in the same style, but rest assured that each pendant or earring will have different color accents, or a slightly different shape. Besides jewelry, they also make plates, bowls, and other decorative housewares.
