My mom was actually the one who found this beauty. We were out shopping one day when she spotted this on the rack. I will never forget – she held it up and asked “Is this too weird for you?” I laughed, grabbed it from her, and said “Not at all!” She should have known by this point – even though I was in my 20s and no longer a crazy goth chick, I still like weird. Just tasteful-weird (aka – I have retired my …

Who would have thought that I would love chunky, heavy jewelry so much? In all other aspects of fashion, I seek out far slimmer pieces. I hate big, clunky shoes, and I avoid clothing that isn’t sleek and svelte. The big pieces of jewelry bring a nice counter-balance.
Blox Designs is a perfect example of chunky jewelry. The designers, Magdalena Kubik and Lori Reynolds, both come from interior design backgrounds; subsequently their designs incorporate tiles made of glass and metal. The focus is on clean, modern …

I should preface this review by stating that is “chick lit” and I have never in my life read a chick lit novel. Not Bergdorf Blondes, not The Devil Wears Prada, not Shopaholic. I have never even read a Jane Austen book. I am not really a chick lit kind of gal.The Immaculate Complexion by Edie Bloom was a painless way to ease into the genre.
The novel follows Marnie, a down-to-earth, vintage wearing, organic loving girl who is temping at LeVigne, one of the biggest cosmetics companies …

I admit it: I’m a little OCD. When I got this necklace from Designing Diva, I was a little confused. Was it broken? Why were there hoops only on half? It finally got through my head that it was supposed to be asymmetrical. Ok, I thought, I’ll give it a shot.
I tried it on and fell in love with it. All of my OCD quirks flew right out the window. I paired it with my Proenza Schouler Palm Tree Dress, and it was …

I adore my father-in-law but… well… he’s a geek, in every sense of the word. He knows he is a geek; he embraces it.
One of his geeky indulgences is Dr. Who, a British sci-fi show that has been going on, in several incarnations, for about as long as I have been alive. One of the good doctor’s trademarks is his obscenely long, wide, 1970s-inspired scarves. So when I first took up knitting, my husband immediately found a Dr. Who scarf pattern for me to make. He …

This was the third corset I ever bought, purchased from Isabella Costumerie. I found out about this corset maker via one of my favorite bands, Rasputina. They are notorious for always wearing well-constructed corsets during their shows.
I was lucky enough to find this ready-to-wear in her closeouts, for a third of what a corset of this quality would cost (one day, I will have a custom made corset). After receiving this corset, I suspect Isabella Costumerie will be the place I go for corsets. …

I was recently clued in to this awesome (or awesome-looking) trade show in New York. I am heartbroken that I cannot attend, so I am going to blog about it instead.

LENY is the New York edition of LondonEdge, a UK show that started in 2000. 2007 will be LondonEdge’s Stateside debut. According to the website, it grew out of a lack of niche exhibition outlets. Generally speaking, this is “alternative wear” – there are so many sub-niches and sub-sub-niches represented here: punk, cyberpunk, goth, club, rockabilly, psychobilly, …

Every girl I know (and half the guys) know and love Zappos.com. It is simply the best internet shoe store – and possibly better than any brick-and-mortar shoe store. They have an enormous selection, free and fast shipping, and the best customer service around.
I was in Vegas this weekend, and I didn’t do much shopping (which my wallet appreciated). Friday night while picking up our car from the valet, I noticed a little flyer on the valet desk. 10% off your purchase from the Zappos.com Outlet. …

I spent college dressed as a typical college student – t-shirts and jeans when I had 10 minutes, sweats and pajamas when I didn’t. This was one of the first feminine, designer tops I purchased, not long after graduation. It took my family and friends by surprise. Alyse, wearing pink??. To be fair, this is really more of a dusty rose. I wanted the black version, but they sold out before I could get my hands on one. The was just something about this …
