I know what you are thinking. “Great, another stupid iPhone article. Can’t I even escape that thing on a fashion website?” Well, no, not really. But I am not here to talk about the usability of the phone, the maybe, maybe-not technological breakthrough, or anything like that. I am here to talk about this phone as an accessory.
I was not planning on buying the iPhone opening day. My husband, of course, was. My plan was to see how he liked the phone, and the carrier (I was not excited about switching back to AT&T or Cingular or whatever the hell they are calling themselves this week). If all was good, I would get one in a few months. If the service was unbearable, I would upgrade to the newest Blackberry. I had been using my husband’s hand-me-down Motorola Q for the last month. It was great at first. I loved having a full keyboard, and the email was indispensable. But it was highly flawed. It was slow, it had a horrible battery life that couldn’t even take me through the day, and it froze or crashed frequently.
Thursday night was the last straw. The phone froze three times on me in the space of a few hours, then went all the way and gave me the mobile equivalent of the Blue Screen of Death. After a master reset gave me a working phone with no data, I said “Screw this, I’m getting an iPhone.”

Yes, we waited in line for the iPhone. My husband loves waiting in line for huge product launches. We had a big group of friends there, too. They lined up around 10:00 am; I showed up around 1:00 pm for lunch, then went shoe shopping (look for those beauties in an upcoming post). I only ended up in line for about two hours.
Maybe it was because I had none, but the iPhone exceeded my expectations. Like all of Apple’s products, the design is beautiful. it is small and sleek - about the size of a standard iPod, and about the thickness of the old iPod Minis. There are no unsightly buttons, corners, or edges. Everything is smooth and rounded softly. It is remarkably slender. It leaves virtually no bulge in my pocket. I normally do not keep my phone in my pocket because I don’t like the unsightly bulge. But if I forget and slip it into my pocket, I won’t feel self-conscious about it.

The iPhone is the phone equivalent of the Little Black Dress. It goes with everything, fits in to any situation. The face is a smooth, solid black, with only the faintest depression for a home button. The back is silver brushed metal with a black base, marred only by the camera lens - even that is about pea-sized and pushed off to the corner. The phone has a bit of heft too it, but is not heavy. Just feels solid and well constructed, like the well-made jewelry I am always raving about on this site.
Yes, it is expensive. But so are good shoes - actually, the iPhone cost more than any one pair of shoes in my closet. It is worth the investment - the perfect example of style meeting function.
