Since each piece is hand made, it allows the designers to make each one slightly different. “It is a stronger piece that way,” Sanja say via translator. Alyse expands on this: “We have both been doing fashion and visual arts for many years, so at this point it comes out naturally and rapidly on its own. We do many variations on elements from earlier work.” In fact, the designers keep boxes of fabric scraps, bits and pieces of trim, and miscellaneous bits for use in each creation. “I have many pieces of material, which wait to be put in their own place in their own time,” Sanja muses. “I do not know if that is collage or painting, maybe both one and the other.”

No piece is this more evident in than the lovely grey and red dress I have here. The bodice is made of a thin, stretchy piece of textured charcoal fabric. The skirt is a darker, complimentary grey in silky-soft velour. Various appliques and bits of trim in red and white offer an eye-catching contrast. My favorite design elements are the subtle pinstripe patches near the hem. The entire piece is finished with contrasting red stitching. The fit is fluid, though I do believe I am a bit busty to do this dress justice. It is exciting to put on a piece that you can guarantee no one else will be wearing. On top of that, Aelisheva’s pieces sell for around $100 apiece. Where are you going to find haute couture for $100?
