“I started designing nighties in part because I couldn’t find anything that met all my needs,” explains designer Treea Cracknell. “I wanted a nightie that felt luxurious, was flattering and made me feel sexy and beautiful but didn’t leave me feeling overexposed.” Thus, Sleep With Modesty was born.

“The name Sleep with Modesty is kind of a pun, as it as it refers in part to me. My bohemian parents named me Modesty Tree. I’ve never used my first name, and added an ‘a’ onto the end of Tree before going to school.” Born in Mexico City and spending much of her early years driving around Central America in a yellow VW Beetle, Treea later studied photography in art school. After over 10 years in new media, she decided it was time for a change. “My mum taught me to sew when I was young and I’ve always designed and made clothes, so when I decided to start my own business designing clothes seemed like a natural step.”

Treea’s designs are both elegant and sexy. When my husband first saw the Flora nightgown I fell in love with, he thought it was a cocktail dress (boys… oy). With it’s curve-conscious shape, flattering cowled neck, and daringly low back, it really could go either way. “My inspiration for the backless nightie was a 1930’s evening dress I bought. I thought it would be lovely to wear something so beautiful all the time,” says Treea. Treea’s old-glamour style is inspired by 1920s and 1930s negligees given to her by a friend. “They inspired me to start designing my own modern take on nighties that were equally beautiful to wear.” The whisper-light silk floats and dances around the body, almost as if you aren’t wearing anything at all. The slight sheen of the silk gives the dress an ethereal glow. Wearing one of Treea’s nightgowns feels angelic.

Treea is involved in virtually every aspect of her creations, from initial designs to pattern cutting. “I’m also involved in making up some of the nighties, but I do have a great team of seamstresses that I work with who sew most of the garments,” she extols.

Treea is currently working on new designs, as well as adding a line of dressing gowns and cashmere bed jackets. “Women love my nighties because they are so wearable, making them feel both sexy and comfortable. Men really like the fact that their mates actually wear their gifts rather, not just on special occasions,” Treea says. Don’t forget, Christmas is coming up. And that naughty Mrs. Clause lingerie is only good for one night.
