Ninaki Priddy’s jewelry is everything we love in rings: it’s big, it’s gaudy, it’s heavy, it’s shiny. With a background in medicine, but a lifelong obsession with jewelry (”I remember wearing a ring on every finger when i was fifteen”) turned Ninaki towards a more artistic major. She took up sculpture, and was fascinated with the discarded pieces of Pink Utah alabaster being chipped away. “All the smaller pieces of stone that people would carve away were still big enough to do something with - what, I didn’t know… I just thought the remnants were still precious, not meant for the waste bin.”
These chunks of alabaster were the start of her jewelry career. She still carves her masters out of alabaster. Ninaki’s inspiration comes from structure, even the demolition of structure. Between anatomy classes and architecture classes, her life has revolved around structure, whether it be bone or steel. “This
first collection was really a play of space,” Ninaki tells us. “It’s actually one form, the organic, in a transformation of 17 frames, or moments. Each piece is a graduation from its predecessor; so fluidity and sinuous curves were very much exploited in creating a sense of movement in the collection.”
