Heather Donahue is a computer programmer by day, self-taught jewelry designer by night. “I’ve recently turned to jewelry as my creative outlet. I’m striving to make this a full-time thing one day,” she says.

This piece is made with African jade and sterling silver chain mail. “It was inspired by the Toto song, ‘Africa,’” Heather says.

She talks about her method: “It sounds kinda funny, but I started the design process by just looking at the beads. Getting familiar with it’s shape. I knew I wanted to make a bracelet with it, so I wanted to get a feel of how it might lay on the wrist. I also wanted to incorporate some chainmail, but wanted to use a weave that would balance out the width of the jade. That’s where the bubble weave came in. It’s a nice weave width-wise to compliment the jade, but also light and airy enough to make a fantastic bracelet. From there, it was just a matter of putting them together.”

Heather’s jewelry is a family affair. Her company, Erin Lillies, is named for her daughter. Her husband is a woodworker (also primarily self-taught) and creates intricate wooden jewelry boxes to stow your baubles in.
