Gazebo Textiles is a true indie fashion house, run by artist Ricki Lee Moler out of her actual Pennsylvania home. A life of creativity has lead her to creating cut and sewn apparel, each piece being individually hand painted for a truly one-of-a-kind creation. Hand painting fabrics is just what it sounds like. Instead of dying fabrics in huge batches, each piece has special paint or dye applied by hand.

The titular gazebo is real – it is where Ricki learned her fabric painting techniques. …

In case you haven’t noticed, Spork Fashion loves Smashing Darling. Run by Trish Ginter and Julie Rorrer, they appreciate indie fashion so much, they have turned it into a career. Here, Trish tells us the secrets to their success.

How did Smashing Darling start?
Now there’s a story … for anyone who wants the long version, we got it all down in the About Us section on SmashingDarling.com. The short version is that in the process of starting a new business designing and manufacturing baby bibs (big, bad …

Jib & Genoa has a unique take on bracelets. Make them big, but make them feather-light. Like all of their pieces, gold and silver are presented nearly flat, with intricate designs carved out of them. I love the whimsy of the Bubble bracelet. It’s a little tough to get on and off – it can be stretched open and closed, but I am too paranoid to open it much. The work is worth it. But my favorite is the Orchid bracelet. This unique …

This weekend, Mr. Spork and I went to the Griffith Observatory, one of the biggest, most technologically advanced public observatories in the world. I may be a fashionista, but I am also a little bit of a science nerd (just a tiny bit). So I was enjoying my time there from a purely educational standpoint. We walked down one hallway and I was confronted with an orgy of celestial costume jewelry. “The sparkling ribbon of time,” starting with the Big Bang, was illustrated by nearly 2,200 …

I have been called a lot of things, but preppy has never been one of them. I’ve never worn a polo shirt; never had a sweater tossed jauntily around my shoulders. But Attus Apparel’s polos are different. You won’t find a crocodile stitched over the breast. Instead, Attus Apparel stitches each of their polos with emblems that speak to their target 20-something audience: the finger, a skateboarder, a 40 of beer. Along with their rugged, destroyed edges, no one will mistake you for a prep.
These …

I love monkeys. A while back, a knitted a sock monkey hat. When I saw a friend of mine had a pair of sock monkey slippers, I had to have a pair! I am normally not one to run out and buy the same stuff my friends are wearing, but c’mon, how cute are these? And for $12.99 (made by Nick & Nora), you can’t go wrong.

Now I just have to prevent my puppy from thinking they are toys…

She Beads might not exist today if it hadn’t been for Michael Jordan. Yup, the Michael Jordan. While She Beads designer Sandy Rueve was working as an X-ray tech for the Chicago Bulls, Jordan spotted her stringing beads in the locker room and asked for his own set. Sandy wasn’t making her own beads at the time, but was motivated to do so, and thus She Beads was born.

She Beads are hand-rolled clay beads incorporating a technique called caning. Sheets, wedges, and rods of clay are …
