Our economy is tanking. It is hard to justify buying yourself a pretty little something with the high unemployment rate, banks going under, houses being foreclosed on. Ok, enough downers - let’s talk about something brighter. How about buying yourself a pretty little something that will help others around the world?

Project Have Hope was created by photojournalist Karen Sparacio as a way to not only feed the people of Uganda, but give them a way to feed themselves. Money raised by Project Have Hope goes towards building schools and giving women loans to start their own businesses. But Project Have Hope doesn’t just request donations. They employ local women to create jewelry, paying them fair wages, and helping them sell their wares worldwide. All proceeds go right back to the village.

The brightly-colored beads are hand-rolled with recycled paper then lacquered for shine and durability. Loose beads are also available in a variety of colors for those who want to create their own masterpieces. The beads are beautifully crafted - each bead different, but complimentary to the rest of the strand. Project Have Hope also sells CDs by local Ugandan musicians, and blank notecards featuring Sparacio’s photographs.

So, let’s see. Recycled materials? Check. Environmentally-friendly production? Check. Helping the less fortunate through education and self-sufficiency? Check. Guilt-free shopping? Check.
