Boho Magazine: So Stylish, You Won’t Even Know You Are Going Green

10 October 2008 615 views 2 Comments

If you’ve been reading this site, you know I am wary of green couture. I love the philosophy behind it but I don’t want to be mistaken for a “dirty hippie.” I like being clean and smelling nice. I don’t want to wear itchy, bland hemp clothing. I like wearing a bra.

Boho Magazine is my new fashion bible, worthy of sharing a place on the nightstand with Vogue and W. Boho is laid out like a traditional fashion magazine. There are pages of beautifully photographed fashion editorials. Designer profiles. Fashion advice. Runway reports. New beauty products. But everything in the magazine is green - including the pages. It is printed on 100% recycled paper in the USA (it’s not glossy, but it is full-color), and even lists the ways in which the printing of this magazine have a reduced eco-footprint.

Every product, design, and beauty product is recycled, organic, and/or fair trade. A handy-dandy leaf system ranks products on their green-level, based on their product, packaging, and practices. Inspirational articles - like women who are raising awareness about ocean conservation - are never sappy. I love the section on recycled accessories, featuring stylish bags out of soda can tabs and jewelry out of recycled bottles. There are tips on easy ways to go green, organic recipes, and repurposed style. And that is just the first issue!

The writing is sharp, the products are stylish, and the ideas and advice are useful. I cannot recommend this highly enough. It only publishes quarterly right now. Get everyone you know to subscribe and let’s get this monthly! Boho has made me a believer - I will no longer fear that going green is painful, smelly, or unfashionable.

I’m actually really glad that a publication is showing “Going Green” in a chic light. Someone’s gotta do it.
