Diana Widman’s Linen Collection - But It’s Metal
It’s cloth. No, it’s metal. It looks like cloth. But it feels like metal.
It’s both, kind of. Bookbinder and printmaker-turned-jewelry artist Diana Widman is blurring the line between the two. Widman takes sheets of precious metals, and gently folds them to create jewelry that mimics undulating silk or freshly washed linens. Appropriately, she calls this her Linen Collection. With an eye towards creating “tailored” pieces for the working woman, the unique pleats catch the eye of those who prefer art jewelry.
I got the chance to check out some of Widman’s pieces. Among my favorites are her signature cuffs, the first pieces she created. The wide surface area is the perfect showcase for the rippling texture. Unadorned rings with the same texture make a great wedding band choice. Another favorite is the smooth ribbon ring, its unique shape accented with diamonds. I found the earrings to be hit-and-miss. I liked the Skinny Mini earrings, with a deeply folded texture and garnet and amethyst accents - modern and easy to wear. But I found the Grid earrings and the Circle earrings less enticing. Their folds are too calculated, even, like they are following a pattern. Although they are light, their awkward shape is too big for delicate ears. The outstanding pieces here are definitely the bracelets and rings.
